An Open Letter to Secretary Salazar, Senator Begich, Senator Murkowski, and Congressman Don Young

Bristol Bay is a national treasure. Offshore drilling amid the region’s rich waters would threaten more than 40% of the nation’s wild fish catch, including the largest runs of wild sockeye salmon on Earth, and the jobs, livelihoods, Native traditions and communities they support. Bristol Bay’s world-class fisheries are too valuable to risk for the short-term benefits that offshore oil and gas development would provide.

President Obama and Interior Secretary Salazar wisely protected Bristol Bay and the southeast Bering Sea from offshore development through 2017. But as we know from the region’s long history of leasing, buybacks and protections won and lost, the push to drill will continue unless a lasting solution is in place.

We, the undersigned, urge you to protect Bristol Bay and Bering Sea waters from offshore drilling permanently.
